Some of our readers may remember an old Vidio Arts production by the same name, where John Cleese tries (unsuccessfully) to manage a meeting of famous people from history (Elizabeth I and Winston Churchill to name but two). I am remined of it as I have just spent a week attending poorly managed meetings comprising (not famous) but equally ego driven executives.
<i>Summary</i> <ul> <li>In recent years, Senior Pharmacy Managers in the South East of England have become increasingly aware of the difficulties associated with recruiting individuals of the right calibre to hospital Chief Pharmacist posts <li>Research into the role of the hospital Chief Pharmacist was commissioned in order to understand better why recruitment had become so difficult <li>The research was informed by a literature search and was designed to test a number of hypotheses thought to influence recruitment <li>The outcomes indentified action that could be taken to improve the position. This included setting up a development course in the South East to enable senior pharmacists to make informed decision about their prefered career pathway. </ul>

<i>Summary</i> <ul> <li>The inpur of all stakeholder organisations is required to ensure that medicines are well managed across a health community in terms of entry of new medicines and interventions, safe and effective choices and equitable access for patients. <li>Then clinical and financial risks and benefits associated with medicines are best managed using a collaborative, area wide approach to medicines management. Commissioner and provider organisations have traditionally worked together to address these issues in Area Prescribing and Medicines Management Committees (APCs) or equivalents. <li>There is considerable variation in the extent to which APCs are active, the influence they have and the ways in which they operate. <li>The key to ensuring that APCs effectively support the local medicines management agenda lies in each of their stakeholder organisations gaining benefit from working in a co-ordinated manner. <li>This article outlines how APCs can reinstate their role and to ensure that they are fit for purpose. </ul>
